The New-ish Oak Chardonnay is not like most Little Farm Chardonnay. Usually we use only old, neutral barrels, but for this wine, as the name suggests, there is some 2-year old oak that adds toasty, butter and nut notes to the crisp and fresh lemon and stone fruit. The racy, wet stone minerality lingers through the finish and the oak gives a wonderful rich texture.
Vintage & Production
Vintage 2016 was absolutely ideal for Chardonnay at Little Farm. A warm and early spring set up a perfect canopy with a good sized crop. What looked like a very hot season changed with one of the coolest July’s on record. This cool month extended the growing season, allowing extra flavour and complexity to develop in the grapes while retaining perfect balance. The grapes are organically farmed in the mineral rich, calcium carbonate soils of our home Mulberry Tree Vineyard in Cawston, Similkameen Valley. Three clones are used (76, 95 & 548) and our winemaking is hands off using native yeast, lees ageing and low sulfur levels. There were only two barrels of this Chardonnay, fermented wild and then aged on the lees in second use oak for over a year before settling and then bottling unfined and unfiltered in early 2018.
